An Answer

I posted this on my other two blogs. Its kind of a response to Jennida's assignment for me. Of course its a video, and of course im in it, but ive only done the first edit. and no its not youtube friendly, and yes its too big to send over email, even as a compressed file.
fuckery, i know.
ask and you shall receive.

Ive just been researching this whole idea of who i am outside of sex/sexuality. its difficult because i dont; however the symbology-ish-ness of the bluebird is pretty accurate and kind of awesome. i looked at some poetry and literature as suggested by jennida and this is what i came up with. read on bitches.

relocate to
www.niaburks.blogspot.com and read the entry titled Bluebird dated july 7 2008. feel free to comment here, or on my blog.

Ok, I will respond to your responce...

Yo Nia, one thing I might suggest... is to read poetry or any type of literary form which relies heavily on metaphor. You keep asking "What do you mean: what does it look like?"... my suggestion is to remove (or consider removing) the literal. That could be one of the strengths of our arch-enemy: abstract painting... could it be that sometimes that form is an emotional response? what if that example of a type of that sort of work is someone elses emotional reaction to exactly the sentiments you are expressing? what does 17 look like? a number? nah. a little depiction or re-enactment of any of us at that age? probably not... (i think if i forced myself to create that image-- it might be Bunicula sucking the guts out of a 10 foot carrot on the roof of a burning building)
That is why we are artists... we resuppose and redeliver what the rest of the planet can't put in to words. But they understand and resonate with the truth of a work even if they cant put a finger on it.

Also little lady, I defy the concept that all woman are nothing more then their asses! There is a huge wealth to you that is before and outside of sexuality... it is what your sexuality is rooted in and flows out of.

Our summer assignments to each other aren't intended to be hurtfull or confusing or upsetting, or derogatory in any way! ...just to push one another into directions and places we don't generally force ourselves into... THIS IS JUST "FOR FUN"!

what do you think "I was born a unicorn" could mean metaphorically?

Ok so you all want specifics:

Nia you can choose between the following:

a) chose to compose a metaphorical self portrait of your self at seventeen...... no sounds, no video. only stills. don't try to hit everything just try an give a good concise snapshot. -1 photo.

The age doesn't have to be specific to 17 but I want to see how you perceive yourself at a distinct age or time in your life that most see as being "pivotal." I don't want to see a literal depiction rather something emotional or representative of who you were. I want to see an artistic meeting between who you are now and who you were and how that conversation may be rendered.

b) Depict in a series of three photos why you make art.

In short why do YOU make art? Not how or in what vein, but why. What drives you, what makes you be here on this chosen path that is so vital, so intrinsic to your being, that art has to be "it" for you? Not why you are in school, but why art? and not music, not computers, not business? I think this is a serious question for all of us to ask and I think it defines who we are and what we want out of all of this. So I ask this of you: why you make art?

John I give this one to you specificlly although I would love to see you all do something with this next one as it is directed but totally open to your own style and creativity:

a) Create one still photo using the following: your self, a slice of bacon, something blue, a piece of paper, and a sock. Outside of these items, you may choose any additional things to include at your discretion. It may be about nothing or something specific. Just make it great!

This is designed to stretch your creative juices, it's a simple exercise and it totally up to you as to how strong, playful, or strange it will become. Often times we need the ordinary everyday to be paired together to spark something new that might not ever have happened given your normal practices.
b) I would like to see you take a small prop and give it a name, give it a history, a future, in short a story and it will be the star. Pick a continent and start from there.

Lastly, Jennida I would very much like to see what you do with the bacon....also you could try:
b) I would like to see you do a piece that involves people interacting with your art. Take an element from one of your previous pieces that wasn't able to be fully realized and make that the focal point.
It would be nice to see you come back to something that didn't quite work the first time and concentrating on making it work outside of all of the other many considerations you seem to deal with.

assignments

first off, hassan cheated.

John:
what if all was well? what if you didnt have this overload of events in your life? what if skys were blue and everyone was well and you didnt have to carry the weight of others?
what would you make art about then?......now go do it. go make a piece about what you would make art about if you were not making art about clair/leukemia. and if clair was well, and you still wanted to make artwork about clair, then what would you talk about? currently, i only see her illness, which is such a small part of her amazing personality.
if this didnt happen, what would you be doing?

hassan:
i want to see you create a piece that is minimal. by this, i mean formally minimal. your work has many layers and its often very busy and colorful. what if you made a formally simple piece? subject matter can change or remain the same. doesnt matter. i just want to see what you can do if you could work with the basics.....

jen:
i want you to make a piece that is narritive, with voiceover. linear narrative. begining to end. plot/purpose. whatever. should you choose to do video, time is not an issue. long or as short as you want.

go forth bitches.

due date? 2 or 3 weeks-ish? informal crit at my place? or jens roof?

eh?

Hassan I think you cheated!

summer luvin'

Alright you all have a chice:
a) chose to compose a metaphorical self potrait of your self at seventeen...... no sounds, no video. only stils. don't try to hit everything just try an give a good concise snapshot. -1 photo.

b) Depict in a series of three photos why you make art.

c) create one still photo using the following: your self, a slice of bacon, somehing blue, a piece of paper, and a sock. Outside of these items, you may choose any additional things to include at your discretion. It may be about nothing or something specific. Just make it great!
Hassa

do'n it and do'n it and do'n it WELL!

ok you nervous nellies, I will post 1st... (geez!!)
--because I love the concept of endless possibility and playing (where we shouldn't)
I am posting these in a OR b format... meaning-- you can get wit dis/or you can get wit dat! if you are clever enough to combine both of your choices... you may be even more of a mystical creature I assumed you all might be. (maybe one of gandalf's offspring?)

ok, here goes (and if you have questions-- post them, or email or call whomever it is you are questioning!!

one last thing? lets make a due date!!!!

--------------------------------------------------

NIA:
1) what is there (who are you?) before sex and sexuality?
and 2) for that matter, what you might you find if you tried to remove humanity/human form, or just to put it simply: remove people from your work?

JOHN:
we know we love abstract/experimental stuff.... 1) how about a totally structural or formal, totally non-narritive experimental peice that you can play with just to play?? beauty for beauty's own sake... blow off a little steam and have fun stuff??
or
2) we get to see peices of you, John, through secondary mirrors and perifery subjects, what about you step into the center and let us see what happens??

Hassan:
1)what if you let someone step in for you and act out some subliminal need to act out while you direct the situation...(and what if they wear clothing?) or even act with you? what if it wasn't a one man act?
or
2)what if you remove your performative acts from metephorical space (like a wooden box structure or academic setting with "powerfull" chairs) into a social, interactive world... i mean, what if you needed to escape a locked car in a parking lot, or had to do a performative dance in a supermarket? then what?

summer project thinking

Ok bretheren!

Just to reiterate...

Us 4 returning 2nd year grads have descided we'd like to create projects for each other just to kinda playfully stretch each others creative thinking/process/habits or whatever... (for fun)

We each will assign each other a project (so, each of us will recieve 3 project assignments-- which are totally up to us in how we approach or handle them)

I think this will be fun!

I will post your assignments (John, Nia and Hassan) shortly! I think we agreed to post each others assignments on here!?

I also think we should come up with some collaborations... (whatever happend to buck nutty and the rodeo--whatever project???)
